Sheaf Hotel
1 St
Austell
Black
Prince, Tribute
(H This
warm and sociable community pub is conveniently situated near the top end
of Bodmin's main street. The single bar is not very large and can be
very cosy on busy evenings - live music appears on Sat eves. There is a
small quiet lounge at the back, often used by town groups for meetings.
The pub hosts teams in the local pool, darts and euchre leagues, and Tue
is quiz night. Excellent home-cooked 'pub grub' is available (but no
lunches Fri, no food Sat eve), and the Sunday roasts are legendary.
There is a small sheltered patio area for smokers; also at the rear are
10 letting rooms. Families with children are welcome. |

(H) A
grim-looking testimony to its former function when seen from a distance,
the pub part of Bodmin Jail has been tastefully refurbished to create a
comfortable lounge/dining area, a separate small rear bar; and a
pleasant outside area for warm summer evenings. The unusual setting is
most imposing, and a tour of the prison museum is a must. The guest ale
is varied regularly and is usually from a Cornish brewery. The
restaurant offers a wide range of freshly-cooked, locally-sourced food,
and fine wines are also available if you wish. Children are very
welcome. |

Wetherspoon branch was opened in December 2008 in a converted chapel
originally built in 1840 to celebrate 100 years of Methodism, hence its
name ('Centenary Chapel'). The front door is approached up an imposing
flight of steps, whilst the interior has been tastefully adapted to
create a two-storey pub to the Lloyds No. 1 format. The main (lower) bar
sports two banks of four handpumps each, offering a mix of the usual
Wetherspoons selection plus a few Cornish and other guest ales. A real
log fire adds warmth in winter, and the church organ remains as a
feature. The upstairs room offers a smaller selection from the beers
down below, while the tops of the organ pipes form a central feature of
the bar. Disabled access is via a ramp at the front. |

(H) This
small single-bar drinkers' pub close to the town centre, offers a
welcoming atmosphere to locals and visitors alike. It is simply
furnished with a décor tending towards the spartan, although
refurbishment was at the start of 2009 a work in progress with gradual
improvements planned as the year unfolded. Longer-term plans include
provision of a new kitchen to permit lunches to be served. The pub is
laid out to a split-level format; the main bar is warmed by a wood
burning stove and the small lower-level room houses the pool table.
Close to the preserved Bodmin & Wenford steam railway, which
connects to the main line in summer, the pub fields teams in the local
darts and pool leagues. Beers from local breweries other than St Austell
may appear at times. Buses stop at nearby Mount Folly. |

(H) Dating
from the 18th century and formerly the town's Debtors' Prison, this
locals' pub is entered direct from the public car park or through a
leafy garden containing a stream and tropical plants, presided over by a
stuffed lion. The single bar, which is subdivided by archways, contains
a unique and eclectic collection of antiques and military memorabilia.
The Lion's Den restaurant upstairs offers a good menu prepared with
local produce
(meals 1200-1400 and 1800-2100, no food Mondays). There is a paved
garden for families. |

(H) Dating
from before Napoleonic times, this pub claims to be the oldest licensed
premises in town. The lively, slate-flagged public bar provides pub
games and supports a league level quiz team, as well as hosting a conker
contest in autumn. The recently-extended lounge is quieter and preferred
by locals seeking a more relaxed pint. There are always one or two guest
ales served in this pleasant pub, which is on the edge of the town
centre and slightly too far out for the pub crawl 'circuit'. |

(H) Traditionally-styled
English pub in the town centre, popular with locals. The modern interior
is tastefully appointed with memorabilia. The pub was once a wool shop,
hence the name. Large screen TVs are in evidence, and the piped music
can be noisy at times. Food is available daily 1200-1400 &
1830-2030; there is a separate restaurant next door. |
