(H) Formerly
the Commercial Inn and hidden away at the bottom of town, this historic,
characterful and cosy back-street pub is situated in a conservation area
beside a small river and is worth seeking out. The front door is
barrel-shaped and leads into a traditional old low-beamed bar, heated by
a huge wood-burning stove. No dogs are allowed inside; there is a
sheltered but simple beer garden and outside smoking area at the rear of
the pub. |

(H) The
first known written reference to this large town centre pub dates from
1489, when it was closely involved in activities at the port of Penryn
and with the prominent people passing through - Henry VII is said to
have slept here. Three beers are usually from Sharp's and Skinner's; a
fourth guest beer sometimes also appears. Much of the pub's interior is
authentic, although now open plan but divided into a number of
compartmentalised drinking spaces, and with a large games room/bar at
the rear. The outside drinking area is a patio and there is a smoking
area. The pub is family and dog-friendly, and hosts a variety of
charitable events; live entertainment Fri & Sat eves. |

W/days: 1100-2300 Blue
Anchor Spingo Middle
(H) The
nearest thing that Penryn has to an ale house, this single-bar town pub
is run by a jovial Dutchman.
Favoured by a good cross-section of locals and students and
decorated with foreign coins and banknotes, the pub has 6 handpumps
serving mainly Skinner's ales - the selection does however vary.
It is also one of the few free trade outlets for Blue Anchor
Spingo Middle.
The bar room has a raised and comfortably-furnished separate
drinking annex at the rear, dominated by a huge ship's wheel. Food is
confined to simple bar snacks. There is no jukebox, although a piano is
available for competent pianists, and occasional impromptu jam sessions
may occur. A late night licence means drinks are
available sometimes until later, but at the landlord's discretion and
with no further admissions to the pub after 2300.
No children or dogs. |

(H) Small
town centre locals' pub with a single room. At the back it has an
extensive multi-level patio, much of it covered to offer protection from
the elements. It includes a smoking area. Unusually, the garden includes
a swimming pool. The pub sells the only St Austell beer in Penryn; a
second brew may appear in summer. Families are welcome, but no dogs. |
