(H) This
400-year old family-friendly pub is designed like a ship with bars on
both floors.
Heavily themed on piratical/nautical lines, festooned with
original salvage from local wrecks to give added interest to a rambling
old maze of rooms on the two floors, worth a few minutes' exploration.
Food is served downstairs 1130-1430 and 1800-2130 (2100 Sundays). |

a lane off the promenade, this spacious pub is the last relic of the
seafront public bathhouse, demolished in 1860. It has a surprisingly
roomy interior with the original three separate rooms largely opened
out, retaining a separate bar in what is now a large function room;
there is also a large and pleasant suntrap of a beer garden. Food is available
1200-1400 (except on Sundays); beer samples are happily provided on
request. Dogs and
families welcome until 2100, or later in the garden. |

(H) A
real local pub on the corner of a rare Victorian residential square in
the town centre, and close to the railway and bus stations. It is mainly a one-room pub, but there is a
cosy snug with settees and an open fire in a small room behind
the bar. Meals are offered daily in summer, but are restricted to
weekends (Thu-Sat eve, Fri-Sun lunch) in winter, although soup and
sandwiches are available daily. One of the real ales is always Cornish;
the guest beer is varied
frequently. The pub is a short walk from the bus and rail stations. |

hour before closing, and breakfasts are served from 0830 in summer. The

pub at the top of the town, near to the old market.
Said originally to have been a detached building, the
pedestrianised shopping street has gradually absorbed it over the years.
This is a friendly drinking base, with a slightly raised,
comfortable lounge area. Two tables outside enable you to watch the
shoppers struggle by in summer. Families welcome. |

(H) This
traditional Cornish inn sits nearly opposite the Town Hall at the top of
town. Sensitively refurbished in 2001, it has a small basic bar with a
wooden floor, and a snug leading to a lounge area where families and
dogs are welcome. The ales, up to five, offer an ever-changing range
both Cornish and from up-country, and often feature micro-brewery brews;
draught Bass also often appears. The beers are dispensed from the handpumps in the bar on the
left as you go in. Lunch is
served daily except Mon, and with discounted prices on Tue and Thu.
Outside drinking is on a pavement patio; parking is in the public car
park opposite. The pub was in Victorian times referred to as 'Mr Tonkin's
beer house' and once served as a staging post for Royal Mail heading for
the Lands End area. |

Once a Courage pub called the One & All, it became themed on
becoming a free house as the landlord always wanted an Irish pub!
All comers welcome. The pub supports darts, pool and quiz teams,
while prominent televisions cover sporting events. Live entertainment
Sat eves. The Heligan Honey may be substituted by another beer from

Courage Directors (H) The
rather small façade to this maritime pub close to the promenade opens
into a surprisingly large and comfortable interior, despite retaining
the original wooden floorboards. The landlord/chef
takes a pride in his beer - the guest ale is usually Cornish from such
as Sharp's or Skinner's - and provides food of a high standard, mostly
sourced locally - it is available 1200-2200 every day.
Families and dogs are welcome in this pub, whose name dates from
when the Navy had a Penzance depot. |

hence the name. You may bring your own food. |

King Abbot (H) Typical
example of a two-bar Cornish country pub, in an old granite building
dating back to 1624 and converted from a farmhouse in the 1950s as the land
was developed on the edge of town. Real cider, Weston's Old Rosie, is
served direct from the cellar. The separate and roomy lounge bar extends
into a raised dining area with an impressive stone fireplace, and both
bars are carpeted throughout. The capacious garden is well-stocked with
trees and shrubs, lending an almost rural feel to this town pub, which
also has good disabled access. Outside smoking area. Buses from the
stations stop outside the door. |

local inventor and largely frequented by colourful locals. Although
there are 4 handpumps not all the ales may be available, especially in
winter; nevertheless a third from the St Austell range can usually be
found here. Quiet at lunchtimes, it can be noisy in the evenings - there
is a raised dance floor/stage which doubles as a games area at the far
end. The décor includes a collection of brass musical instruments. Food

King Abbot (H) Named
after Lord Tremenheere of Penzance, this
is a bustling and classical Wetherspoons operation in the centre
of town. Created from five converted shop premises, the pub is open plan
on a split level, with the lower level hosting the bar, home to 10
handpumps; the upper level is the family area. In typical JDW fashion,
there is a standard offering of 4 or 5 reasonably priced national beers,
plus 2 or 3 ever-changing guests which may be local - Sharp's and
Skinner's ales are often seen here. Interestingly, all the signs are
dual language - Cornish and English. The beer 'garden' is an enclosed
courtyard. Food is available all day, until 2300, and Thursday is 'curry
club' night. |
