Atlantic
Inn Open
W/days:
1100-2300 St
Austell
Trelawney, Tribute, Proper Job, HSD, Seasonal Beer
(H) Spacious,
busy open-plan pub with open beams, once part of the adjacent Atlantic
Hotel. It has a separate dining area although bar meals are available,
and a good range of pub food. There are several handpumps dispensing
most of the St. Austell ales, although not all may be on offer at any
one time (especially in winter) and the range may be varied. A small patio
(where smokers can go) overlooks St Marys harbour. Arguably the best pub in Hugh Town for beer
and conversation, and family-friendly, although children are not
encouraged after 2100. |

1100-2300 St
Austell
Trelawney, Tribute,
HSD,
Seasonal Beer
(H) Named
after the two local lighthouses and with a unique pub sign (compare the
sides!), this lively pub is adorned with much of the marine décor
commonplace on the islands, including old photos of local shipwrecks and
former lifeboats on the walls of its large bar and pool room. The
upstairs sports bar becomes a restaurant (open evenings) during the
summer months. The lunchtime bar snacks are popular. Children are
welcome. |

(H) Not
so much a pub, more of a pub garden! Previously this establishment
operated only as a tea garden, but is now one of the most reliable
outlets on St Marys for sampling the locally-brewed ale. In a
picturesque location on the coast path and overlooking St Mary's harbour
with superb views beyond, the large terraced garden is presided over by
a modern stylish indoor dining area housing a small bar from which the
ale is dispensed. |

Mermaid
Inn Open
W/days: 1100-2300
(2400 over holiday weekends) Ales
of Scilly
Scuppered
(H) Busy,
boisterous and popular with locals and tourists alike, this old granite
pub by the quay is the first one you come to when leaving the Scillonian
ferry from Penzance. The main bar, which usually has 'background' music
playing, is crammed with maritime bric-à-brac. The pub has a separate
restaurant upstairs, with a newly-refurbished cellar bar/restaurant
downstairs called the Slip Inn, which opens lunchtimes and evenings and
is more family-orientated. A
third ale may appear during summer. Although tied to a national pub
chain, the island location won it dispensation to sell beer from the
Ales of Scilly Brewery, which may vary within the range available. |

Old
Town Inn Open
W/days:
1100-2300
(Restricted winter hours, Dec-Mar) Ales
of Scilly
Scuppered
(H) This
modern and roomy pub is located below the airport and about 15-20 min
stroll from Hugh Town. Wood panelling and flooring dominate the two
bars, the front one of which is mainly for day-to-day drinking, while
the other is a dual-purpose dining and function room to the rear.
Offering live music nights once a month, the pub is home to the Islands
Folk Club who also perform there monthly.
The real ale is taken seriously here; Doom Bar is always present,
the other two being varied, and there are twice-yearly beer
festivals held normally in June and September.
Food is served daily 1200-1400, 1830-2030, and includes homemade
bar food and a weekday evening bistro. Accommodation is in three 4-star
rooms. Good wheelchair access. The pub is signed up to the CAMRA
members' discount scheme. |

Club Open
W/days:
1200-2300 Beer
Range Varies
(H) Although
named and managed as a 'club', this Hugh Town establishment has a pub
licence and features 2 bars, once much frequented by former PM Harold
Wilson who opened the newer Lyonesse Bar. The older bar and family room
overlook the harbour. Up to 3 real ales are available during summer
(from Easter to September) including St Austell Tribute and other local
beers (the selection may, however, be varied). |

Star
Castle Hotel Open
W/days:
1200-1400,
1800-2300 Beer
Range Varies
(H) Real
Ale is served in the Dungeon Bar, a tiny and restricted space in the old
castle dungeon under the hotel, reached down a steep and narrow
staircase from hotel reception. The tiny bar can accommodate only one
barperson, but the drinking space is surprisingly large.
The two real ales are varied but usually feature one of the Ales
of Scilly range; the other is also normally a Cornish mainland brew such as St
Austell Proper Job or Tribute. Interesting décor reflects the history of the castle
and the maritime heritage of the islands. Bar snacks are available, with
full meals being taken in one of the restaurants upstairs. |

Turk's

W/days:
1030-1630,
1900-2300 (1030-2300 Jun-Aug; restricted winter opening) Ales
of Scilly
Scuppered
(H) The
only pub on the island, well-loved by locals and visitors alike, with an
outdoor drinking area which can have few rivals for its scenic beauty.
Opening hours may vary slightly according to boat times; the jetty is
only a couple of minutes walk away (you can watch your boat approaching
from the bar). Evening boat trips run from St.Mary's in summer to sample
the ale and food. The Tribute is sold as a house beer named Turk's Ale,
while the guest ale when available is usually from Skinner's. Order
lunchtime pasties early! |

Fraggle
Rock Open
W/days:
1000-1630,
1900-2300 (1000-2300 summer) Sharp's
Doom Bar
(H) Tiny
café and bar north of 'Anneka's Quay' on the east side of the island,
selling one real ale which is changed occasionally, although Doom Bar is
most often available. The Fraggle functions effectively as the island
'local', and sometimes features live entertainment. There is an upstairs
restaurant (which may also double as the bar), with views over the sound to Tresco. Food is available
1200-1400 - except Fri lunchtimes when you are invited to bring your
own food - and 1900-2030; Friday is usually fish 'n chips night. Handy
for the boats at low states of the tide. Opening times may be more
restricted than shown during the winter. |

Hell
Bay Hotel Open
W/days:
1030-1500,
1830-2330 (closed in winter) St
Austell Tribute
(H) Much-modernised
hotel bar, whose patio looks out over nearby Gweal Hill and the rocks to
the west of Scilly. The single handpump dispenses the Tinners under the
brand name normally found in East Cornwall and Devon - Cousin
Jack. The brew available may however vary from time to time. The hotel is on the
opposite side of the island from the boat quays, about 15min walk
direct. |

(H) This
plush hotel is perhaps an unlikely outlet for real ale, but the Round
Island Bar & Bistro indeed sports two handpumps, albeit
positioned almost out of sight of the casual observer, in a low position
behind the bar. They dispense brews usually rotated between the local
brewery and St. Austell brewery beers, although the real ale may not always be
available. Pictures and paintings depict the rocks and sea in its
changing moods. Families are welcome, but there is no food Mon eves. The
spacious garden, which is beside the Lower Town quay, affords superb
views over the many rocks and islands of Scilly. |

Firebrand,
Scuppered
(H) The
Seven Stones is a comfortable, pine-decked community pub commanding
beautiful views of the islands, especially from the garden. The real
ales may be varied from time to time, whilst the third may only be
available at busy times. The location is convenient for
awaiting a boat to the other islands from Lower Town quay, a couple of
minutes walk away. A range of food is available (1200-1430 and
1800-2100), but beware the hungry sparrows in the garden. |

(H) Excellent,
if expensive, old pub near New Grimsby harbour, a haven between
demanding coastal walks and the boat to St Mary's. Recent extensions to
the garden and provision of a covered 'pavilion' have added to the
attractions of this popular real ale outlet. Beers may be varied,
usually within the Skinner's range, with another from local brewery
Ales of Scilly often making an appearance; the house beer is a 4.2%
blend marketed as Tresco Tipple. An 'Ale and Sausage' (or similar)
festival is held over the spring bank holiday weekend, with a second
beer festival at August Bank Holiday. Occasional live music. |
